Following Mojang's acquisition by Microsoft, Minecraft Java Edition has been operating as-is. Bedrock Edition was created to integrate with Microsoft's account system however, Java has been operating on its own Mojang account island up to this point. Java Edition will soon require the use of a Microsoft account to play, but you'll at least be getting an unpaid cape to help you with your problems.

You will need to transfer your Java or Mojang account to the Microsoft account system by the beginning of 2021. Mojang states that this is to introduce two-factor authentication in order to provide greater security, but it will also lead to improved parental controls as well as chat and invitation blocking, and account integration with Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.

Mojang does not plan to alter Minecraft mods or PvP. 2C1C Java and Bedrock will remain entirely separate games. You'll be able to keep using your existing Java username, however in the event that you're creating your first Microsoft account for the first time, you might have to swap account names. If you already have an existing Microsoft account then you'll be able to join your Minecraft sign in immediately.

To ease the pain of the transition, Mojang is giving away what was once Java Edition's most sought-after item that was the cape. Participating in the migration will get you a free cape. Although it doesn't come with the Minecon exclusive patterns however, it will let everyone feel a bit royal.

Although there is no reason to expect anything to change, players have concerns. One of them is that the more restrictive terms of service offered by Microsoft could result in bans that could lead to certain players being denied access to Minecraft.

Further details can be found in the FAQ and official announcement. We'll find out how it plays out in early 2021.
