It was a disaster London has never experienced before, which began with a fire that erupted in an East End bakery on July 1666.



The flame quickly spread and went on to burn for days, engulfing swatches of the city and claiming thousands of homes.



Now gamers are being offered the first-person perspective of the Great Fire of London, thanks to a range of specially made maps which can be played in the hit game Minecraft.

The Museum of London created the Minecraft maps to mark 350 years since the onset of the blaze.



Players can take on the blaze city through a series of mini-games.



The second map will detail how the fire spread across the city. The map will be released in the coming months.



Participants will be able recreate the Great Fire through a number of mini games as flames burn through the world of blocks.



Playing as a journalist from the London Gazette, whose offices were claimed by the flames on the second day of the fire gamers will pick out which household items to save.

The second map, to be released in the coming months, will reveal how the fire began in the bakery of Thomas Farriner (pictured) and spread through the city



Participants will be able experience the Great Fire through a number of mini games. They will be able to join firefighters fighting the flames using traditional tools that are used in the trade, such as recreations of a 17th Century fire truck (pictured) and leather buckets



They can then walk through diverse terrains, such as forests and caves. Players can also fly up in the air to get an aerial view of the surrounding landscape.



With the Oculus Rift, now available, players can enter virtual reality.



Joshua Blair, the museum's digital learning coordinator, stated that the first map in the Great Fire1666 series allowed us to immerse users in London's life and the times of 1666. MINECRAFT EVENTS SERVERS were able to recreate the narrow streets and iconic landmarks like St Paul's Cathedral or London Bridge to create the setting for the fire.



He added: "This second map is where you can find the Great Fire story. We hope players enjoy learning about this pivotal event in the history of London.



According to its creators the mini-games are a draw for historical figures such as King Charles II, Thomas Farriner (whose bakery was the cause of the fire) and Samuel Pepys (a famous diarist who documented the fire).



The game forms part of the museum's Great Fire 1666 exhibit that runs through April 2017.



The new maps will be available for download on Mac and PC beginning on September 2nd.
